First Prime Minister of Sri Lanka
D.S.Senanayaka
Don Stephen Senanayake, commonly known as D. S. Senanayake, was the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka .He was born on October 21, 1884, and is widely regarded as the “Father of the Nation” because of his vital role in leading the country to independence from British rule.
Senanayake played a key role in negotiating peaceful independence, which Sri Lanka gained on February 4, 1948. He became the first Prime Minister on the same day and served until his death in 1952. During his leadership, he focused on agriculture and rural development, introducing major irrigation and settlement projects such as the Gal Oya scheme to improve farming and provide land for people.
He was also the founder of the United National Party (UNP), which became one of the major political parties in Sri Lanka. D. S. Senanayake was known for his strong leadership, vision for a self-sufficient nation, and efforts to unite different communities. He passed away on March 22, 1952, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Sri Lanka’s history.
