She was born on April 17, 1916, and was the wife of S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. After her husband’s assassination, she entered politics and became the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Sirimavo Bandaranaike served as Prime Minister three times: from 1960 to 1965, 1970 to 1977, and 1994 to 2000. Her leadership was a significant milestone in world history, as it opened the door for women to take on high political positions globally.
